Laundry Liberation
Ever feel like laundry is eating up your precious time? I haven’t met too many people who enjoy doing laundry.
According to the American Time Use Survey by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average American devotes a mere 17 minutes per day to laundry. Now, while that might not sound like much at first glance, let’s break it down. When you add up those 17 minutes each day, it totals 119 minutes per week and nearly 60 hours per month.
That’s a significant chunk of time that could be reclaimed with some strategic organization and efficiency. As someone who’s all about maximizing productivity and streamlining processes, I’m here to show you how to make the most of those minutes and transform your laundry routine from a time sink to a time saver. Let’s liberate you from the laundry time drain with some simple organization ideas.
4 Simple Tips for an Organized Laundry Room
Whether you have a huge laundry room or a hall closet with a stackable washer and dryer, there are a few organization tips that can make laundry a little more pleasant. Keep reading for four tips for an organized laundry room, despite your laundry room design.
1. Declutter Your Laundry Room
Before you buy the first bin, or plan your laundry pod storage solutions, you must go through everything and get rid of what you no longer use. Often, this means being honest about what you will never use or what doesn’t belong in the laundry area at all.
Travel sewing kits, too many mesh lingerie bags, detergents that smell terrible, shoe shine kits, and sweater shavers are all items that you can toss or donate if you never use them. If you keep items you no longer need or use, they will simply be in your way as you try to access what you need.
Clearing away the unnecessary to make room for streamlined efficiency and functionality is how organizing begins.
2. Ensure Convenience
When you need to complete a task that you don’t want to do, it’s important to remove as much friction as possible. If you need some help here, you can read more on How to Get Stuff Done When You Don’t Feel Like It.
Part of reducing friction is decluttering, and another part is ensuring the items used most are the easiest to reach.
Your everyday detergent should be at arm’s reach, and in view. Bleach, stain remover, or specialty detergents can be in the back of the cabinet or on a higher shelf.
Similarly, if you have a lot of clothes that need to hang dry, ensure that the process is simple so you aren’t tempted to toss the item into the dryer and risk damaging it.
We love drying racks that pull out from the wall or a hanging rod somewhere near the washer, so you can hang something as soon as it comes out of the washing machine.
3. Pause Before You Decant Your Detergent
While scrolling through Instagram, it’s hard to miss the trend of impeccably organized laundry rooms, complete with every detergent pod and scent booster meticulously displayed in curated containers.
However, it’s important to recognize that trends don’t always align with convenience. Those picture-perfect snapshots might showcase laundry essentials neatly arranged in glass canisters, but in reality, functionality should take precedence over aesthetics when it comes to efficient laundry room organization storage ideas.
We love streamlining a space by removing as much retail packaging as possible, but we want to be clear that this will require maintenance.
Is it realistic to think you will refill the canisters when they are empty? It’s okay if you know you don’t want that extra step! Even in our own homes, we use canisters for some items and not for others.
Balance how you want the space to look with your capacity to maintain it.
4. Create a Smooth System
My husband prefers to do a higher quantity of smaller loads of laundry, while I prefer just one or two larger loads. It really doesn’t matter how it happens. We just need it done.
So, figure out your preferred method. Maybe you use one or two days per week to do all of the laundry. Or, maybe you do a small load every morning to stay on top of it.
Try it one way for a while, and try another if you don’t like it. Also, know that how you prefer to do laundry now may change as your household changes.
