The One Thing You Must Do When KonMari’ing Your Clothing

February 18, 2020

< back to blog home

"I'm in love with my 'new' closet. I thought I was doing a fair job at keeping it cleaned out, but boy was I wrong!!  Caroline helped me see my clothes in a whole new way. Now I actually enjoy standing in my closet!"

- N.E.--Real client after clothing session

I hear this ALL the time.  Many clients I work with on clothing tell me that they keep a pretty good check on their clothing and think 90% still spark joy for them.

Want to know what we do that is the game-changer?

TAKE EVERYTHING OUT.
THAT'S RIGHT, EVERYTHING.

The thought of removing everything from your drawers and closet (and yes, even the spare bedroom closet) can be a little daunting.  The goal isn't for you to feel overwhelmed or burdened, but it is for you to see how much stuff you own.  It's only when everything is in one place that you can grasp the full quantity of tops, skirts, etc.

You are going to feel all kinds of things.  Excitement for finding a long-lost top.  A little guilt over not having a pair of pants mended.  Inspired to get dressed and not wear the same ol' things all the time.

I hope you feel empowered.  Empowered to let go of things that no longer spark joy because you have enough things that do spark joy.

IT'S TOO MUCH.  I DON'T THINK I CAN DO IT.

I totally get it.  I found it extremely difficult to remove everything in my closet and drawers when I KonMari'd my clothing.  Start with an "easy" subcategory.  Grab all of your tops and go through those.  Move them out of the way (don't put them back in the closet), and go to the skirts.  You get the idea.  Eventually your closet will be empty, but it doesn't have to be in one swoop!

YOU BUY YOUR ITEMS NOT ONLY WITH YOUR MONEY BUT WITH YOUR TIME.

Every single time I've worked with a client on clothing they sort their clothes, and when we start putting things back into the closet, they end up getting rid of even more.  Just last week a client was putting her shoes back in her closet and decided to part with a pair of boots that she initially wanted to keep.  She said it wasn't worth her time or energy to move them back in the closet.  She LOVED what she was keeping and didn't need them.

IT'S NOT ABOUT GETTING RID OF EVERYTHING, IT'S ABOUT MAKING ROOM TO BETTER ENJOY THE THINGS THAT YOU REALLY LOVE.
