We are excited to share a recent coastal family garage organizing project. This project is relatable because it involves an actual garage used by a busy family with many hobbies and interests. Most of us can relate to it.
Not only do garages become dumping grounds for things you don’t want to see in your home, but garages on the coast have their own challenges because of all the gear needed for water activities.
As you can imagine, The Simplified Island team loves to get our hands dirty in a cluttered, disorganized garage!
Coastal Family Garage Organizing Project
This family has three kids and many outdoor hobbies. They love to boat, fish, tailgate at ECU games, camp, and play sports. They also have lawn equipment and tools.
Keep reading to see what we did in this garage and how you can use some of the tips in your garage. You can take this on as a DIY project or reach out if you want help from a home organization expert.
Garage Organization by Category
We will share how we tackled this project, starting with the entryway, sports equipment, tools and hobbies, games, bikes, and more!
Entry
We tried to use as many existing shelves as possible, so we created space by the door for a shelf to hold their shoes, cleaning spaces, and backup dog food.
Think about what items you use as you go in or out of the house, and place them as close to the door as possible.
Sports Equipment
This family loves sports, including golf, tennis, baseball, and beach volleyball. We were thrilled to see the built-in shelf with the tall bottom shelf that allowed us to put the golf bags below it.
This space became their golf station, where they stored the carts, balls, tees, and shoes. We also used this space to store their son’s baseball bag. If your kids play sports, you know you need folding chairs so they are close at hand.
The large beach volleyball set is on the back wall shelves, and we added a wire mesh cart for various balls and skateboards.
Tools & Hobby Equipment
The built-in shelves on the back wall are massive, which we loved, but the items needed to be decluttered and sorted.
We reused as many totes as possible, and a few purchased new, weathertight totes for additional items.
We sorted the items by category and grouped them on the shelves so the family knows where to look for lawn equipment, pest products, camping supplies, and tailgate supplies.
The smaller tools and accessories were getting lost on the large back shelf, so we added the workstation.
The workstation has drawers, shelves, a pegboard, and a work surface, so it’s perfect for rigging fishing gear or handling a quick home repair.
Because they love to fish, we added a rolling cart for fishing rods. The family can roll it where they need to prepare for a fishing trip.
We prefer to get as many hand tools off the ground as possible. We love using tracks or long hooks to do this.
Toys, Games & Bicycles
We added a shelf to the side wall to hold toys and games. This shelf holds bocce balls, kites, spike balls, and more.
When the family goes out on the boat, they can easily find an activity to take with them.
We added a bicycle rack to hold the least-used bikes. The family’s most-used bikes stayed out and easily accessible, so they are more likely to be used.
This garage has it all! It has everything the family needs. We loved working on it, and they were thrilled!
