How to Have a Great Vacation in Your Own NC Vacation Home

July 1, 2024

< back to blog home

When you own a vacation property, you may be searching for how to have a great vacation. Unfortunately, for many, vacation properties feel less like a getaway and more like another home full of chores and things to handle.

You want it to feel like a vacation.  We want to change that for you!

We want you to have more time on the beach and boat and less time doing chores in your home.

How to Have a Great Vacation as an NC Vacation Homeowner

Here are four tips for stress-free living spaces in your North Carolina vacation property.

Only the Necessities

It is tempting to load your home with beautiful decor, entertaining pieces, games, and everything you would have in your primary home, but I encourage you to pause before doing so.

More stuff in your vacation home will lead to more things to maintain.  Instead, use the home for a season and see what you need.  Don’t be afraid to have some empty cabinets and drawers.

Organize for Others

I organize my home so other people can find things without me.  My house looks nicer when organized, but a picture-perfect home is not my goal.  Instead, I want my kids, husband, and guests to access what they need easily.

So, even if you aren’t inclined to organize your home for yourself, think about the things your family members and guests like to use and organize those things.  Add labels if you use opaque bins or baskets, and give first-time guests a quick tour to make them feel at home.

Easily accessible items include linens, toilet paper, drinkware and kitchen utensils, beach towels and sunscreen, drinks and snacks, and games.  I also like to have a utility drawer or cabinet for things like tape, batteries, and clothes pins.

 Zones for Various Activities

We want you to spend more time doing the activities you enjoy, so we create zones to make the items needed for those activities easily accessible.

Most vacation homes at the beach need an outdoor zone for boating or beach activities. This is where we keep the beach chairs, coolers, Shibumi Shade, etc. Inside, we keep beach towels and sunscreen close together so they are easy to toss into a beach bag.

You may love to run or exercise outdoors, so we want your sneakers, yoga mat, running water bottle, and visor to be in one space.

If you love to fish, create a space in the garage or spare room to store your fishing gear.  Include a tabletop or surface so you can work on tackle easily.

Store Holiday Things

If you use your vacation home often, you’ll likely want to celebrate various holidays there!  From July 4th to Mardi Gras and Easter to Christmas, holidays are a big deal at the coast!  The only trouble is that many vacation homes lack attics and storage space.

Keep decor small enough to fit in these weathertight bins to store holiday decor in your garage or storage building.  Once the items are in labeled bins, put them somewhere out of the way. You don’t want items you use once per year in the way of things you use regularly.
